Honors Physics 847 is a
full year course dedicated to a rigorous study of how the world around us works.
It is intended for the serious student seeking a detailed knowledge of the laws
of the universe.
General topics include:
Mechanics
Motion, Energy,
Work, Two & three dimensional vectors
Waves
Sound & Light
Optics
Mirrors and
Lenses
Electricity and Magnetism
AC & DC current
How magnetism &
electricity are related
Modern Quantum Theory (if
there is time at the end)
There are many other
subtopics under these general headers as you will see when we get into the
course work. The course at times approaches beginning Mechanical Engineering
topics and principles.
Objectives:
1.)
Visualize & sketch physical situations from a description of the problem & apply
mathematical principals to the solution.
2.)
Apply the course principles to the successful completion of labs.
3.)
Write clear concise lab reports.
Requirements:
Every day you need to have:
1.)
Your book and notebook. I recommend a loose leaf style that makes
it easy to insert and/or delete pages as necessary.
Laptops are also encouraged for class.
2.)
TI-83 Graphing Calculator
Evaluation:
Tests: 40%
2 to 3 per quarter tests are always announced!
Quizzes: 20%
3 or 4 per quarter quizzes
are always announced
Labs
25%
Several
Homework 15%
Policies:
Be on time for class! Have
all your equipment. No borrowing is permitted so get in the habit of
having all of your own tools. The only exception is having a tool fail during
class. Five tardies to class results in a detention so please don’t be late! No
equipment when needed also results in a detention so it’s a good idea to have a
special box to carry your geometry specific tools around.
With very few exceptions,
homework is assigned every class except the day before a test (when the
assignment is to study) and the test day itself.
Ask questions, get extra help from me in room 350
when necessary. There are no dumb questions!!
