You will be able to remember material more easily if you can make it meaningful.

  • Practice and Repetition - some things just must be memorized.

              - Use flashcards for learning terms and definitions.

ie: On front of card - term                         On back of card- definition

  • Association -      By relating something you need to learn with something you already know. This technique may be useful for words with close meaning/spelling

ie: ARTERIES carry blood AWAY from the heart

  • Chunking - Put many bits of info into chunks. Useful for memorizing lists.
  •  Use of Meaningful Material - Use the glossary of words, to make complicated terms more easily understood.
  • Acronyms- A word formed from the first letter of words in a grouping. This helps when you have to remember words. It is helpful for rote memory, but not for comprehension.

ie: HOMES - Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior

ie:  WURKcreW - gifts of the Holy Spirit- wisdom, understanding, reverence, knowledge,   courage, right judgement, wonder and awe

  • Visulaize/ Create Mental Images-  This technique can be used to remember something by visualizing where the words were on a page. Draw pictures to aid your memory.

ie: concept maps, summary charts and tables, labelled diagrams.

  • Sentences / Acrostics - using the first letter of each term to create a sentence or name aids in memorizing. This technique is useful when the terms you are remembering must be remembered in sequence.                                                                                                            ie:  King Phil Came Over for the Genes Special

Kingdom, phylum, class, order, genus species

  • Rhymes and Songs -
